Trefethen Case Held Across Witnesses as Trial Reopens

The defense in the Trefethen case called witnesses in quick succession yesterday while the prisoner stayed off the stand. Dr William Hitchings testified he drove near Wellington bridge on December 23 1891 and heard nothing unusual. others described muddy roads and a sick horse nearby. Handwriting expert David N Carpalho testified the anonymous note was not written by Trefethen but by Tena Davis, and Boston post office clerk Charles A French agreed. Sadie Johnson the clairvoyant was brought in on a chair as she identified Deltina J Davis from a photo and recounted a visit to her Tremont street address. Cross examinations followed with questions about the medium business and known associates. The day ended with further negations and the court adjourning to resume in the morning.
