Fight for 5 Cent Fare At Billerica Rail Hearing

Leading citizens of Billerica urged railroad commissioners to lower the Lowell and Suburban street railway fare between Billerica Centre and Lowell and to report on the Concord River bridge at North Billerica. Key witnesses argued that a 5 cent fare promised to real estate holders had not been kept and that workers faced hardship paying 26 cents daily. The hearing was postponed for three months to allow the company’s plans to develop.

Commissioners Wrangle at Hearing Over Private Sessions

At yesterday afternoon’s hearings before the Board of Election Commissioners, friction between Commissioner John J. Hogan and board members Sanger, Kennedy, and Burlen dominated proceedings. Hogan pressed for secret sessions to address illegal voter registration, while Chairman Sanger and colleagues favored public hearings, with Hogan warning he would assert his rights. The cases involved Lloyd H. Chase’s complaint against Lloyd W. Chase, plus issues around Walter B. Goddard’s listing and a mix of testimonies about Chase’s residency and lodging at 75 Chandler Street. Goddard’s clerical error led to his name being stricken and a re-registration required.
