Plea for Howard in Goebel assassination case unfolds
In Frankfort Kentucky on September 24 the jury trial of James Howard for the killing of William Goebel began with defense attorney Carlo Little urging that self confessed conspirators testimony be deemed unreliable and that Howard innocent without proof of his presence in the Secretary of State’s office. Prosecutor T C Campbell argued the alibi failed given evidence and Howard’s flight after the shooting. W C Owens closed for the defense as Judge Williams to rule the next day. The Franklin county grand jury said no further distant witness investigations were possible but suggested bonds for certain individuals ahead of the next term.
