Albany dispatch reports Governor Black backers claim Colonel Roosevelt cannot run for governor this year. They cite sworn residences in Washington, D C, military service, and tax records to argue he is not a New York resident eligible for the nomination.
Varina Anne Jefferson Davis known as The Daughter of the Confederacy is laid to rest in Richmond. Her casket arrived at 8 40 am and was greeted by Lee Camp Confederate Veterans and Pickett Camp delegates. Local dignitaries Colonel Archer Anderson J Taylor Ellison E L Hobson and Dr George Ross with their wives received the party.
Doctors praise Paine's Celery Compound as a distinct remedy for nervous system debility. Professor Edward E. Phelps of Dartmouth College is noted as first prescribing this cure for dyspepsia biliousness liver complaint neuralgia rheumatism and kidney trouble.
The service at St. Pauls Church followed by a long funeral procession to Hollywood Cemetery depicted a high mass of mourning for Jefferson Davis. Mrs Davis and relatives walked beside the casket as veterans and state troops lined the route. The Rev Dr Hartley Carmichael led hymns and prayers with a simple grave committal.
An explosion in a coal mine caused multiple fatalities and injuries. Eight workers are dead and three others are hurt, officials said as rescue efforts continued at the scene.
Seventy men were entombed by a gas explosion at Snowden Gould & Co.’s Empire mine in Brownsville Pennsylvania. Eight died at once and three were injured. all others escaped after a fire damp blast followed the initial explosion.
A Dorchester Lower Mills Republican Club gathering in Odd Fellows Hall drew ex congressman Harry Atwood and congressman Samuel Barrows among many candidates for Congress in the tenth district and state offices. Tense exchanges arose when Atwood questioned Barrows while Chairman John Conness urged unity as Barrows praised the party’s wartime record and debated future policy.
The World previews Roosevelt’s sworn statement from Washington. He attests he became assistant Secretary of the Navy in April 1897 and that since October 1897 he has resided in Washington with no dwelling in New York City. He explains renting a home at 1810 N Street and notes his family’s move from Oyster Bay.
New York Sept 23. Odell Republican State chairman says affidavits against Theodore Roosevelt do not bar his nomination for governor. Lawyers and judges find nothing in the documents to prevent his nomination and election. Roosevelt’s claimed residence at Oyster Bay L I is noted with taxes, house, servants, and family there.
