Police intervened as a tense scene unfolded with an excited woman speaking loudly. The incident described a near riot involving Italian nationals or interests and a Padone matter, prompting authorities to act to restore order.
In Brockton today the Goodyear Shoe Machinery Company manager and the Sole Fasteners Union secretary warned that almost all major shoe plants may shut as experts replace strikers and edge makers walk out seeking equitable wages. A boycott looms amid labor disputes. several hundred workers quit in Lincoln Thayer and other factories. A separate riot risk arose in Little Italy as Italians protested an Italian padrone's failure to refund job-placement money at Luigi Bianco's shop. Special Officer Hines helped avert violence.
President McKinley and his cabinet visited Adams after a local cabinet session and enjoyed a Berkshire mills tour and a musicale at the Plunkett residence. He walked with Major McKinley and joined in informal greetings, with midday visits from dignitaries and a later invitation to lay a corner stone for a G A R memorial library.
A live trolley wire fell on Washington street at Brookline causing John Spellman and Emil Florman to be injured. Spellman, 35, is critically hurt with a shattered nervous system, while Florman, 43, suffered back injuries after attempting to cut the wire. Cars were halted for an hour as crews addressed the damage and witnesses blamed aging poles.
A fire at McGardell's grocery on Third and Pennell streets Chester injures six seriously when a gasoline barrel explodes blowing out the building side.
In Nashville on September 23, Governor Wolcott and party visited the exposition. They reviewed the U S Cavalry camp led by Major Loud and toured exposition work. Attending officials included Congressman John W Gains Captain H C Ward General C P Thurston and others. The Governor and Mrs Wolcott stood at the reception center among a brilliant throng of ladies and city notables.
Governor Wolcott and staff attended a full dress review followed by a reception at the woman's building with Mrs. V. L. Kirkman and Mrs. Eakin leading the greeting. Prominent city women and the woman’s board were among the attendees as he toured the exposition. He left for Chattanooga tonight, leaving a positive, well received impression as the fairest official guest so far.
Sylvanus Johnson was hanged at 11 32 today for felonious assault in Key West Florida. The knot slipped under the chin and he struggled for ten minutes before dying. He confessed, professed conversion, and forgave his enemies as an orderly crowd watched. He was led from the jail singing Nearer My God to Thee. The trapdoor sprang at 11 50 and the sentence was carried out, with pronounced death twenty minutes later.
A bad freight wreck on the Boston & Albany railroad about three miles west of Pittsfield occurred at 10 45 tonight. A broken track derailed eight or nine cars and blocked both tracks. Two tramps on the train at Chatham may be among the wrecked.
The firm of T. D. Barry & Co. says they have full help and smooth operation while strikers charge the firm is bluffing and training green hands. RE. E.
