In Calais near Grand Lake, a large tubular boiler exploded Sunday morning tearing a side wall and hurled the firebox 600 feet. At the Damanscotta muster, hand engine contests awarded prizes to R. H. Coanse of Thomaston for 217 feet 8.5 inches, Androscoggin of Fopsham second at 183 feet 54 inches, and Kennebec of Brunswick third at 173 feet 6.75 inches.
The Dover based Free Will Baptist publishing house plans moving to Boston after 50 years at its Dover location. Mrs. Goldwarth of Nashua vanished after leaving her home Friday night. Officers search the Nashua Canal with no body found. temporary insanity is suspected in her disappearance.

Also charged is Wm. L. Strong for renting property where liquor is sold. Howe Scale of Rutland tardy paying payrolls, causing unease among workers and tradesmen. a one month advance was paid Saturday with a promise of regular wages next week.
Shoes shipped from Beverly and Haverhill totaling 1,363 and 3,611 cases respectively for the week, with a rise from last year. A Springfield mechanic, Wm T Ferre, accused in a wife assault remains stable after cutting her throat. Firemen plan a grand autumn muster in Oct. Richard Barry, 17, was crushed after being struck by a railroad train at Valley Falls on Saturday night. Samuel Hartley, a weaver at Atlantic mill Olneyville, died at Rhode Island hospital after a horse car crash on the Cranston line four hours earlier. The Supreme court issued a decree preventing interference with Quidnick company management by G P Pomeroy, assignee, after Wm Sprague threatened violence toward a court agent.

A boiler exploded at Shreveport La., Saturday, killing five persons and wounding five others. Thirteen convicts, seven colored and six white, were publicly whipped at Newcastle Del., Saturday. Despatch from San Francisco states 500 deaths at Mazatan during the last six weeks. In Chicago, Saturday, divorces were granted in 40 cases. One judge tried and settled 19 cases in exactly three hours. Frank Plankey of East Tawes Mich., married recently to a girl 12 years of age. Lizzie Wilhelm eloped with James Bell. Robert Bruce is under arrest at Elyria Ohio for the murder of James Ryan. Brace pleads self defense. David Aiken arrested in New York water frauds. Archie Johnson lynched near Asheboro N C. Thomas Johnson robbed and beaten near Salem Ind. Col S Strader killed Bradford Forster in Louisville. George Hein captured in St Louis. Frank Smith wounded by Howertons. Thomas P. Mullaney a 28 year old lawyer was arrested in Jersey City and brought to New York to answer a charge of obtaining by false pretences 800 dollars and a 600 dollar diamond from John Halkett. It is claimed he agreed in June to buy a hotel at Amityville L I for 16000 and obtained cash and the diamond as security for his honesty then disappeared until today.
Washington reports the New Orleans postmaster must follow a state court order delivering material to the Louisiana Lottery company through the New Orleans National Bank. The U S district attorney will seek removal to federal court and dissolution of the injunction. Also notes ignorance of the two cent postage law among postmasters and an upcoming pensioners list print run.
Port au Prince reports government troops suffered a serious defeat near Miragoane last week. Jeremie is encircled by a 3000 strong force, with 1500 besieged. They are provisioned and expect victory. In Santo Domingo, the largest commercial establishment in Santiago has burned, with unspecified losses.
New York Sept 23 The Western Union Telegraph company issued an order cutting rates for messages sent within the eastern region and to and from New York, reflecting a broader move to reduce telegraph costs for business and personal correspondence.
Rev. Phillips Brooks returned from Europe to Boston aboard the Cunard steamship Cephalonia and was greeted by a large contingent of friends and congregants at East Boston. He preached at Trinity Church, urging devotion and the conversion of worship to a solemn consecration, tying Christ’s testimony to human life and modern religious upheavals. The congregation filled balconies and pews, and after the service, many long-standing friendships were rekindled.

In Rutland Vermont on September 23 a 11 month old daughter of Theron Goodwin Jr of Casleton was shot in bed by an unknown intruder. The shooting occurred at 2 am while the mother was with the infant as the husband fished nearby. Authorities investigate amid suspicions the mother may have killed the child during a temporary mental lapse.
The Tennessee sails from Portsmouth for New York tomorrow with a severe leak requiring docking for repairs. In St John, New Brunswick the United States ship Alliance arrived from Halifax reporting all well.

Portland Argus reports Mount Washington fog prompting a $50 hospital donation from Mrs Raymond. Cephalonia arrives with cabin passengers including clergy, professionals, and society figures.
The statement denounces Boston Herald reports as libel and announces legal action against authors and publishers. Linn and McCarty defend their financial status and accuse rivals of seeking to defeat the New York and Boston Inland railroad project. The letter follows sensational coverage and sketches of McCarty’s past.
In Boston area box 47 smoke from a new chimney at the Portland steamboat dock caused no damage. Box 134 reported a fire at Robert Bishop’s Tudor street leather waste factory with $2 damage. H F Holcomb president of the Odd Fellows Benevolent Society says the Sovereign Grand Lodge in Providence is making a fatal mistake by trying to legislate for the patriarchal circle. He argues the circle should not be subordinate to the grand lodge, comparing its relation to the Knights Templars and Masons and noting risks of disruption.
In San Francisco a case on Chinamen claiming British subject status to land in the United States goes before Justice Field for final ruling. Field’s brief notes suggest naturalization confers subject status only within the colony of naturalization, requiring a passport from the British governor for a Hong Kong born Chinaman to prove rights in U S courts.
Caicaco Til Sept 23. Jaccob Schafer, balk line champion, says he will play George F Slosson for the championship emblem if Slosson posts 1000 and a 5000 game is arranged. David Biers deposits 1060 for Slosson and Yank Adams holds the acceptance. A delay is sought to cable Vignaux, with 1000 forfeit at stake for Slosson if the plan stalls three days awaiting Vignaux’s reply.
A fireworks storage outbuilding exploded at the exposition in Pittsburg causing a fire to spread to an adjacent stable housing race horses. Jockey Rogers of Kalamazoo Michigan died in the blaze along with three horses Polka Dot Mand R and a green horse. The two named horses were owned by J A Dustin of Boston and valued at 4000 dollars. Other losses totaled 7500 dollars.

With investment by President Goff and a gate revenue share plan, the firm expects wide adoption including 100 city street lights and 50 to 60 lights for the Grand Trunk railroad.
Early today in Illinois a Cincinnati bound passenger train No 3 collided with No 5 near Seymour. The No 5 engineer and a child of Mrs Taylor were killed and many passengers injured, some seriously. Authorities say No 5 might have disobeyed orders to run slowly.

A Providence telegram claiming the yacht Corsair was lost is dismissed as a hoax by yachting circles. Bowdoin of 268 Madison Avenue states the Corsair is safe at West Point.
The Bangor Commercial notes a new hundred thousand dollar altar in a Boston church, calling it a grand display while contrasting with a five hundred dollar soup house that feeds the hungry poor, highlighting differing expressions of piety.
In Springfield a Democratic caucus selected delegates to state and local conventions. Edward Finnerty and Charles Norton chaired ward 22 caucus naming delegates to the state convention including J. J. McDevitt and William H. Carberry. Reports note Bowerman may remain lieutenant governor and Butler plans to attend the Springfield convention. Robison addresses rallied supporters.

Frederick P. Jenkins, a prominent cotton broker, died at Tremont house on Sept. 4 in circumstances suggesting self-inflicted death. After burial, his business was examined and forged paper totaling 12559.45 was found. It is believed he faced payment due the day after his death and, fearing exposure, took his own life. He was about 48, unmarried, and long regarded as of upright character.
Antonio Leonardo a 19 year old seaman aboard the steamship Iowa was arrested by Patrolmen Burns and Hunt of the first division Sunday night on a charge of stabbing William.
The eighty fifth birthday of Hon. Marshall P. Wilder was celebrated at the Parker House with about 100 gentlemen in attendance. Speakers included ex Gouverneurs Chamberlain Smyth Rice Ames and officers from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Amherst College and the Boston club. Wilder recalled his long career as a Boston merchant and praised industrial progress and national unity, with hopes for future growth and liberty.
