Arthur Sawyer of 45 Summer Street left Massachusetts for New York to wed his stepmother, Mrs Florence Sawyer widow of his father. The ceremony took place in Chenango New York on September 12.
A brisk blaze swept Chelsea yesterday morning threatening the Everett avenue industrial zone and Prattville. Losses include Atwood and McManus box factory two plants stables sheds horses wagons lumber valued near 150 000, Lee Bros shoe plant 40 000, Pope Cottle lumber yard 120 000, Chelsea Bottling plant 5 000, Shank Manufacturing 40 000, Harugari Hall 6 000, Boston Maine railroad 25 000, several dwellings totaling over 28 000, and property damage to Charlestown engine 2 000. Fire burned for three hours and half a million dollars in assets were destroyed.
In Le Mans France on September 21 under the French Aero Club officials General Bazaine Hayter and a crowd of 10 000 Wilbur Wright captured the world's record from his brother Orville Wright. He completed a flight of 1 hour 31 minutes 51 seconds covering 98 kilometres nearly 61 miles in an impressive display.
Following a Fort Myer accident the Michelin cup trial for the greatest distance in 1908 and the Aero Club prize for longest enclosed-ground flight drew strong interest. Wright, initially nervous, faced a windy morning and three false starts after the wind subsided at 4 pm.
Foreman John A. Pearson saw smoke shortly after 8 a m at the Atwood and Man Manus box factory near Fourth street and the Boston and Maine tracks just outside the April 12 fire line. He alerted workers unloading lumber and they began to assist as flames appeared through a drying shed window.
