The soldiers' bonus bill failed of enactment as the Senate sustained President Harding's veto. The House had overridden the veto earlier, with a roll call of 44 yeas to 28 nays, four votes short of the required two-thirds majority.
Charles Holloway an African American athlete once famed in American professional sports before World War I is identified posthumously after a Paris shooting by a policeman. He began as a baseball player in At tleboro Mass and rose to sprinting fame winning many prizes overseas.
National League results show Cincinnati and Philadelphia winning key openers as Boston and New York split games. In the Eastern League Waterbury and Springfield posted victories while Worcester and Pittsfield traded 11 inning drama with Hartford.
Mayor Curley announced that Boston will keep the 1922 tax rate at $24.70, unchanged from last year. He notes most valuation increases hit business properties and that the rate should not justify higher residential rents.

In Winsted Connecticut a dragon fly and a large beetle fought on the steps to the N E Telephone Exchange. The beetle was knocked out in the ninth round when the dragon fly pounced with force, leaving the victor missing after recovery.
New York report says Mrs. Samuel Simpson of Baldwin Long Island, mute since December, suddenly voices a question for her husband Sam as doctors discuss her illness. She learns, via telephone, that he has died of heart failure in New York while they talked about her condition.
Five people were injured when two wire cables failed in the Washburn building elevator at 603 Washington Street causing a dangerous fall and panic in the Essex and Washington Street neighborhood.
A 17 year old girl was locked inside a sealed air proof vault at Old Colony Trust Company on Court Street for nearly an hour. The doors were closed by female employees as a joke. The subject was Howard E Webster, 17, of 660 Main Street Melrose.
Scores of home bound commuters were shaken as an engine and one coach of New Haven train 6427 left the rails between South Weymouth and North Abington last evening. A defective coupling caused the emergency brakes to engage, derailing the train and stopping abruptly. Traffic was tied up for two hours while wreck crews cleared the scene. Conductor Harry J. Madden and Engineer Charles Min ner were in charge.
In Pittsfield on September 20 inspector A H Crabtree of the Treasury Department began examining liquor stored in the basement vault of the post office. He found several empty bottles indicating some liquor had been disposed of as part of the investigation into Clifford H Dickson who faces a 16500 shortage. It will take at least two days to finish the probe.
A woman dropped three new hats yesterday afternoon on Arch Street. A passerby found them in a paper bag and carried them toward the police station. The man wondered if the woman would come to station 2 to claim them.

In Dayton Kentucky area farmer George W. Perry tells prohibition agent James M. Wood that moonshine liquor in nearby moonshiners mash has caused his chickens to become drunk and attack a bulldog. The spree allegedly led to fatalities among the flock.
Annie Harris reports that Sabra Maude Pease, married two months, vanished after a night out at Short Beach. Her body was found with an overcoat clue and evidence suggesting foul play. Police investigate in town and surrounding areas.
Washington reports the British government may pursue a diplomatic approach to challenge U S Navy claims to jurisdiction beyond three miles. The State Department notes Britain has limited itself to seizure details and now appears to shift stance, potentially backing a broader high seas jurisdiction claim.
