Subscriptions to a relief fund for the families of Provincetown fishermen lost at sea are totaled at 21 195.44 with new gifts from Boston and other towns. Donations support widows and children as fund-raisers plan more appeals and community aid grows daily.
Since August 29 mothers with many children faced hard times but have been getting weekly support from a benefactor. The ongoing aid is noted as continuing, with details to follow in later pages.
The central span of the Quebec cantilever bridge was bolted into place at 3 28 this afternoon linking the arms of the world’s largest bridge. The 5000 ton span was lifted 150 feet from pontoons on the St. Lawrence River after a weeklong hoisting operation.
Work today ends the critical phase of the operation as the bridge nears completion. A previous attempt last year to raise a similar span ended in disaster when the link slipped from its supports, causing 14 deaths, and in 197 a bridge at the same site collapsed when nearly done, killing 70.
