Despatches note the fortification at La Pompelle held by the French near Rheims. The bombardment destroyed sections of the city and damaged the Rheims cathedral famed for coronations of French kings and Joan of Arc's legacy, fueling French anger and renewed resolve against the German assault.
Wartime desolation grips Rheims and surrounding regions as cannonades erupt for days. Civilians hide in cellars while Allied and German forces clash along the Oise Aisne and Woevre fronts.
