Man Kills Woman Then Takes Own Life in Clifton Case
In Clifton summer colony a 26 year old woman, wife of Charles F. Guild, was shot dead by a candy maker and pedler named Lawton who then killed himself. He had a prior head injury from a horse kick and left farewell notes, including a message to police about returning a gun. Lawton had been seen near the area earlier and was known to police in Salem. The tragedy occurred as Mrs Guild attempted to remove a child from the scene with a car nearby. The gunshots ended with Lawton’s suicide as onlookers watched in shock.
