The World's Best Books A Critical Review Portrait
A critical review of The Worlds Best Books A Key to the Treasures of Literature by Frank Parsons F E Crawford and H T Richardson from Boston 1889. The piece questions the judges taste and limits of the guide noting the upper shelf of authors and raises doubts about inclusion of Hawthorne Bunyan Tourjee and Voltaire while quoting select extracts and opinions. It ends by advising inexperienced readers to avoid the trio and concludes with a quoted lyric about life and literature.

Archer’s crusade history in English History by Contemporary Writers
The volume on Richard I from 1189 to 1192, selected by T. A. Archer, offers translations and modern spellings of foreign and old English passages with notes and maps. It highlights the period’s cosmopolitan scope, drawing on Itinerarium Peregrinorum and Ernoul among others, while noting fragmentary sources and cautious trust in chronicles.

Critique of Archer and Works on the French Revolution
A review discusses Archer’s Itinerarium and style flaws in early chroniclers, admires parts of his history, and notes weaknesses in Mrs. Farmer’s concise French Revolution summary. It contrasts Hermann Lieb’s critique of centralization and anarchy with dense data and variable English, while highlighting illustrations and print quality.
Elsmere Elsewhere by a Disciple of Clarke
A compact critical appraisal summarizes Mrs. Humphry Ward's Robert Elsmere and compares it with other reforming theological currents. It traces the evolution of church thought from aspiration to breadth, citing Clarke and Burnham, and notes the historical method’s impact on religious truth while predicting firmer ground for future inquiry.
