A late evening blaze at the Edison plant on 669 South Street West Roxbury damaged a transformer by a short circuit. Fire officials estimate $30,000 in damage though Edison cites only a few hundred dollars. Service to several circuits was interrupted for about an hour before an emergency transformer was activated.
Boston faces cold weather as anthracite coal remains unavailable. The strike has delayed shipments with hardly any coal reaching the city and no clear date for allotment. Soft coal is abundant but cannot compensate for the anthracite shortage.
