Allied forces launch across a six mile front capturing Combles on the Combes Bapaume road. Three towns and two woods fall as French troops seize trenches further south and nearly enclose Combles. Many German prisoners are taken in the Terrific onslaught.
Inspectors Lynch Towle and State Officer Sherlock announce three more arrests tied to the arson trust crusade. Benjamin Fine and Isaac Kaufman of East Boston face arson and accessory charges for fires at 659 and etc. Jacob Phillips of East Boston is charged with burning a house at 177 Chelsea Street. The inquiry notes 18 months of professional fire-setters visiting the city, with pay tied to fire losses.
The State Board of Charity completed a probe into the removal of Mrs. Sarah Hooper a 62 year old paralytic from her home to the State infirmary in Te wksbury finding no intent to violate custom but noting disapproval of the method. It says the transportation by ambulance hearse was chosen for the patient’s comfort and she suffered no ill effects and was in as good condition as expected.
General William A. Bancroft, 17 years head of the Boston Elevated Railway, retired from the post as Matthew C. Brush, the vice president, was elected to succeed him. The change, long anticipated by finance circles, ends Bancroft’s era and installs Brush at the helm.
General Bancroft at his Cambridge home refused to discuss retirement with a Post reporter. Other Elevated officials also declined to comment on the change as the directors issued a late afternoon statement confirming action.
Professor Hugo Munsterberg of Harvard will not attend the funeral for Josiah Royce at Appleton Chapel Harvard Yard this afternoon. He cites differing political opinions and courtesy as reasons and notes he will be at Marblehead. Royce’s pro ally sympathies, expressed after the Lusitania sinking, were noted at a January Tre mont Temple meeting with sharp statements about Germany.

Wilbur F. Stone a music and art critic is sued for divorce by Mrs Stone charging cruelty. Stone recalls a past fortune loss and references a prophecy about women asserting rights. He predicts men must unite to defend their rights as women’s rights grow.

In Goshen New York on September 15 1916 a deed dated August 3 1916 transfers Arden House and 2500 acres of forest land from Mrs E H Harriman to her son William Averell Harriman. The mansion perched above the Ramapo valley was unfinished at E H Harrimans death but completed per his plans. Estimated value of mansion and grounds is five million dollars.
London reports a major breakthrough on a six mile front north of the Somme. British forces take three towns two woods and most high ground between Combles and the Pozieres Bapaume road, threatening Combles and Thiepval positions and taking about 2300 prisoners.
British troops pushed the front two miles north advancing near Courcelette and Martinpuich and capturing Flers and High Wood while securing Ginchy. The Bouleux wood north of Combles fell to the Germans.
Forecast for Northern New England calls for fair weather Saturday with cooler temperatures except extreme southeast Maine. Sunday remains fair and cool. Southern New England expects fair and cooler conditions on Saturday with a continued cool spell on Sunday.
A 22 year old Norwood boy was killed in the trenches in France on August 29 during the war. The report notes his death while serving overseas and identifies his hometown. He is mourned by family and community.
In Norwood on September 16 Mrs. FE A Martin learns from a cable that her eldest son Rifleman Arthur Frederick Martin 22 was killed in active service in France on August 29. He enlisted in the British army in April 1915 and had lived in Norwood before moving to the United States ten years ago.
Willis N. Priest of Milo was indicted by a grand jury for alleged murder in the killing of George Herbert at Schoodie Lake last March. Trial was set for March at the request of Attorney General Pattan.
