Governor McCall prorogued the special session late last night but attached a conditional requirement that lawmakers could be recalled next week if Suffolk county reapportionment issues remain unsettled by today’s Supreme Court decision. A letter warned of a possible contingency on future elections.
The Governor noted that proceeding would cause inconvenience to the legislators by delaying pending actions and complicating their schedules. The remark suggested a pause or adjustment to timing to minimize disruption and maintain legislative progress.
Frank Meehan a Sing Sing convict confessed after nerves failed during chair testing for the execution of Thomas Bambrick. He testified he witnessed the killing of Policeman George Dapping and identified the shooter as not Bambrick. Meehan broke down while working near the chair and asked for Deputy Warden Miller.
New York reports that Dr Haven Emerson city health commissioner says rat fleas are the carrier and transmitter of infantile paralysis after testing many pests. The idea follows earlier suggestion by Dr Mark Richardson of Massachusetts whose two children died from the disease.
London reports continued Allied successes on the Somme with Combles appearing near capture. British forces hold Leuze Wood within a mile of Combles western outskirts while French troops push east, taking Le Priez Farm and opening the road toward Rancourt.
German forces along the Peronne Bethune road north and south of Bouchavesnes vainly attacked the newly won French positions. Paris reports the efforts were aimed at regaining their transport line to the north but failed.
Detroit September 14 A year end bonus of 860000 was distributed Wednesday among 1399 Ford Motor Company foremen and department heads. Each recipient will receive 100 to 1000 dollars based on service length efficiency and usefulness. Last year Christmas bonus totaled 730000.
St Joseph Norwestern league outfielder Kenzie Kirkham set what locals call a world batting record with 32 hits in 39 at bats. He has a 14 for 14 stretch recently and previously led the Northern league with a .352 average.
In Erwin Tennessee on September 14 the circus elephant Mary was executed by hanging on a railroad flatcar at Kingsport. The animal weighed and valued at twenty thousand dollars by its owners.
Josiah Royce, Alford professor of natural religion moral philosophy and civil polity at Harvard University, died yesterday at 10 in his Cambridge home. He was 60 and succumbed to heart disease.
Professor Royce stood among the Harvard faculty as a highly distinguished figure. He received seven degrees including A B from the University of California Ph D from Johns Hopkins LL D from several universities and Litt D from Harvard and a D Sc from Oxford.
The Danish steamer Dania arrived yesterday with 15 000 bales of wood pulp from Copenhagen and Christiania marking what is believed to be the first such shipment to the United States. The ship halted at Shields for bunker coal and faced papers checks by British naval authorities. Alongside the pulp the Dania carried 300 tons of iron and 1000 tons of general cargo as part of a series to ease the paper shortage.
In Marshfield Oregon on September 14 a burning Pacific Coast Steamship liner Congress was abandoned with 253 passengers and crew of 170 rescued near Coos Bay. Life-savers and boats from the dredge Colonel P. S. Michie stood by two miles away as crews transferred passengers amid a calm ocean and fear of explosion.
The Michigan docked at North Bend tonight with 170 on board including passengers and crew of the Congress. A blaze broke out at 6 o clock amidships, enveloping the ship in smoke. all aboard were rescued by the Michie gas schooner Tillamook and other vessels, with distress calls first received at 4 55 o clock.
Athens September 14 reports that M Dimitracopulos fails to form a cabinet as entente powers reject his programme. His acceptance of premiership rested on full control of national policy, but he abandons the effort and withdraws from cabinet formation. The dispatch comes via London at 2:55 am September 15.
Edward G Leadbetter aged seven from Somerville was saved from drowning after falling from a float at the Squantum Yacht Club. Jeremiah J Kensley a Quincy plumbing inspector on a motorized rescue swam out in a coatless effort to reach him 150 feet from shore and bring him to safety.
John Abraham alias Charles Peters, a Syrian, was arrested by Boston police for entering Fred H. Hall’s Weymouth residence on September 8 and stealing an antique watch and chain said to be about 200 years old. The larceny was reported recovered and Abraham was handed to Weymouth police.
The New England Milk Producers Association price fixing committee told 3000 members at Young's Hotel that they will force a half cent increase per quart on October 1. They claim the right to set member prices and challenged actions by the U S Attorney General.
Secretary Richard Pattee of Laconia New Hampshire says farmers and labor unions are exempt from Sherman act under the Clayton act and would welcome action. U S District Attorney Anderson states no investigation orders have been received and no investigations are planned.
The price of mackerel fell from 12 cents to 6 cents per pound as incoming boats delivered the largest Maine coast catch in 15 years. Most fish came from Monhegan. About 1000 barrels of bluefish were landed in 24 hours as boats returned to the coast to capitalize on the run.

A message reported that the German submarine Amerika en route from Bremen to New London was spoken last night 300 miles east of Nantucket. If verified the vessel could dock at New London on Saturday.

Harry DeCoy one of five alleged burglars captured yesterday in a sensational Bowdoin street raid West End attempted suicide in his Joy street station cell by swallowing corrosive sublimate tablets hidden in his shoe lining.
Officers Leonard and Cunningham captured five men and three women in a Back Bay house raid. DeCoy, later claiming the name Lee, was taken to Relief Hospital and listed on the dangerous list after writhing on the floor. The gang faced charges of breaking and entering at Mt Vernon Street locations and carrying a loaded revolver.
Former Representative Michael F. McGrath and his brother William L. McGrath were assaulted shortly after midnight on Newspaper Row by six men. McGrath says the attackers are members of a gang backing his opponent in the Senate race. McGrath suffered scratches while his brother lost a gold watch and sustained kicks.
