Engineer Callahan, one of the road's oldest hands, tells how a late heavily loaded passenger train could not halt in time for a freight approaching in dense fog. He and fireman Mr. Little leaped into the ditch as the emergency brakes were applied.
Canaan observes the 35th anniversary of a deadly wreck at the same site as today. The earlier crash also resulted from violated orders and killed numerous train crews, with many similarities to the present disaster.
Forecast shows fair conditions for Boston and vicinity with partly cloudy skies Tuesday. South winds remain light to fresh as the period progresses.

One note says Stevens travels to Boston to see his wife under lung treatment at 363 Massachusetts Avenue.
Funeral style inventory lists unknown women with items including gold watches, rings, brooches, and paper notes bearing names such as Bridget Johnson F M Phelps and Mrs Godfrey. Describes physical traits ages and weights, plus clothing and accessories found with each body and officers note multiple separate subjects.
A Quebec express bound for Boston crashed head on with a freight train near Canaan New Hampshire at 4 26 am. Fifty or more were injured and twenty five killed as wreckage trapped victims. Relatives and doctors arrived while relief trains and hospitals treated the injured.
