The market opened active with mixed losses and notable short selling. Gains came with leadership from Atchison and strength in St Paul and Reading while copper shares and General Electric slipped. By close, grain carriers and Union Pacific posted gains as reports on crop damage proved exaggerated, with United States Steel notes showing heavy liquidation and the Erie quarter’s earnings rising.
