A British ship from Singapore brought Yanko a highly intelligent gorilla to the United States. The captain purchased the ape and a smaller female gorilla from an explorer returning from Southeast Asia. Colonel Frank P. Stone, famed for knowledge of apes, bought Yanko at a fabulous price, noting him as the finest specimen ever brought into captivity.
