Charles Follen McKim head of McKim Mead White died suddenly at his St James Long Island home from heart disease. A Harvard Beaux Arts graduate and Harvard Bowdoin honorary degrees recipient, he co founded the firm with William R Mead after Stanford White’s passing. The firm designed landmarks including Columbia University and Boston Public Library among others.

President Taft and Mrs Taft arrived by carriage from Beverly and went to the Hotel Touraine. A large crowd surrounded the hotel and surged through police lines as the President alighted. Miss Helen Taft, near the entrance, was swept along by the crush and narrowly separated from her father before officials cleared a path for her.
