Maine voters delivered strong Democratic majorities in both chambers in the 1911 election. The new legislature will elect a U S Senator to replace Eugene Hale and appoint top statewide officials including secretary of state treasurer attorney general and commissioner of agriculture. Charles S. Mellen becomes acting president of the Boston and Maine after Lucius Tuttle resigns. He orders milk rates aligned with the New Haven line and pushes immediate electrification of the Hoosac Tunnel. A board meeting in Boston confirms the merger with New York, New Haven and Hartford. Morgan is notably absent.

Boston dress maker Madam Driscoll real name Mary A Dolan of Brookline with a gold facade shop on 715 Boylston street arrested in New York for smuggling gowns worth over 10000 dollars. She arrived from Europe aboard Kronprinzessin Cecilie with 11 trunks of gowns and limited declarations. She was taken to Hoboken for arraignment and faces trial today unless postponed.
In a neck and neck race for chairman, Theodore Roosevelt and Vice President Sherman lead the New York State Republican convention after primaries across four counties. Roosevelt Griscom gains in New York County while old guard strength remains in Kings County under Timothy L. Woodruff despite defeats in five districts. Naval Officer F J H Kracke helps shift one district against Woodruff.
William Harmon Niles a MIT professor long active in geology and physical geography died in Boston at seventy two. He lived at Hotel Brunswick then Copley Square Hotel and taught at MIT Wellesley College and Boston University. He led several scientific groups including the Boston Society of Natural History and New England Meteorological Society. He held memberships in numerous academies and served as Appalachian Mountain Club president.
