In Havana on September 13 Commander Colwell of the cruiser Denver was approached by an emissary of insurgent General Castillo offering surrender if guaranteed a fair trial.

A private cablegram from Cienfuegos Cuba reports that U S Marines from the gun boat Marietta were landed today to safeguard American interests. The message arrived in Tampa Fla this evening confirming the action and location.

Crushed by Giant Auto Car Injures Inspector in Lynn

Richard E. Rogers an electric meter inspector from Swampscott rode a bicycle on the new shore boulevard when a six cylinder touring car driven by Mrs Annie M Phillips of Dorchester failed to stop. He was struck in the road and fatally injured as the car sped by this afternoon.

General Passenger Agent Jopp of United Fruit Company says the six days overdue Brewster may only have had her fires extinguished by heavy seas. He expects a possible communication from Nassau, Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, and notes crew may be battling the situation at present, though fears are grave.

Bath schooner Edwin R Hunt Missing With Nine Men Aboard

A Bath four masted schooner Edwin R Hunt with a crew of nine left for St Ann s Cape Breton to load plaster and has not been reported. Underwriters fear loss while Captain Crowell, absent on this voyage, and Captain B C Sargent of Sargentville Maine supervised. Crowell remains hopeful she may have been blown off course and afloat.

Rushing Warships to Cuba With Marines

The Government orders rapid deployment of naval ships to Cuba. Commander of the cruiser Minneapolis at League Island Navy Yard is to sail Sunday, with the Tennessee and Tacoma expected to join. The Newark and Cleveland are also ordered, each carrying large marine detachments.

No Order for Return of Troops Says Colwell

Havana sept 13 Commander Colwell said he had received no order to return the Denver crew and doubted the Navy Department deciphered his code message. He stated he had acted correctly and was confident events had proven it. If an order came, the ship would be at sea within thirty minutes.

American Flag Floats Over the Castle Grounds

In Havana 120 sailors from the US protected cruiser Denver camped before Old la Fuerza Castle facing the Plaza de Armas. The flag was planted inside the castle line with two field howitzers and two rapid fire guns at the ready as a precaution following talks between President Palma, Sleeper, and Colwell about American interests and order.
