Peary’s Greenland Pole Quest Plans and Family News

In a 1900 progress letter Peary notes he may reach the pole in spring 1901 or try again in 1902. The Windward reached Payet Harbor May 6, establishing Peary’s winter headquarters, and he learns of his daughter Francesca’s death 18 months earlier. The Erik and Windward move vessels, with Cape Sabine wintering arrangements and the expected return of support ships for 1902. Robert Stein and Samuel Warmbath joined earlier, landed Aug. 5, 1899, and sail back with the Windward as the Erik parts off Cape Henry.
