A night of rioting hits South Boston Roxbury and nearby districts. Five men are shot as bands of youths smash stores in a citywide spree with volunteer police unable to stop the pillage.
When Boston patrolmen walked out at 5:45 p m crowds cheered and jeered as hoodlums looted and destroyed property in South Boston and the West End. Women were attacked in public. five rioters were shot during early morning disturbances in the business district.
At a midnight meeting the South Boston Trade Association and the South Boston Citizens Association voted to call a noon gathering at the South Boston Trust Company to plan action if city authorities fail to provide protection for the peninsula. A vigilance committee may be appointed if needed.
In St Paul and Minneapolis on September 9 the public greeted President Wilson with evident temper for the League of Nations like no other time, signaling strong support amid the ongoing reception. Continued on Page 9-First Column.
John A. Scully and a companion fled a West Newton haberdashery after 3 am. Police say Sergeant Waugh shouted halt. Scully was shot in the head and is in dangerous condition at City Hospital. A getaway attempt precipitated the shooting.
