Destruction by Fire Destroys Newport Ocean House
By 2 45 the fashionable Newport street filled with puffing engines and a vast crowd as a fire tore through the Ocean House. By 8 pm the entire hotel was in flames, driven by a southwest wind. twenty water streams were ineffective. The Casino and library roof also caught fire but were extinguished. most guests escaped with valuables. The Ocean House, built 1842 and rebuilt after earlier fires, was owned by the Leland Hotel Company, with $60 000 insurance, half expired.
