Alonzo Grant was shot and killed by Alphonso Smith outside Smith’s house near Orford New Hampshire. Grant came to demand his wife’s return from Smith, drew a revolver, Smith fired, Grant died after about fifteen minutes. Smith surrendered to Sheriff Riley claiming self defense.
Colonel Sexton born in Chicago 1844 enlisted 1861 as private commanded a regiment in the Nashville campaign wounded at Mobile April 1863. He founded Cribben Sexton & Co sheep farm 1867 and became Chicago postmaster in 1889. He held prominence in G A R and Illinois politics.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Illinois and Pennsylvania each claiming wins at headquarters. Philadelphia secures the 1899 national encampment location by a 324 to 256 vote over Denver, with Sexton named commander-in-chief after a bitter New York versus Pennsylvania contest. Fireworks and parades energized the city as delegates prepare for tomorrow’s further elections and resolutions.
Dedham report indicates former ambassador Bayard had a difficult day and remains very weak tonight. He has taken little nourishment in the past 24 hours and is gradually sinking.
Fire department alert at Box 628 last night. Engine 28 tipped over at Washington and Morton Streets injuring driver Frederick A J Corcoran 29. He suffered sprains to his right wrist and ankle and a back strain. He was moved to City Hospital. The blaze was in an old shanty at Walkhill and Washington Streets owned by Richard Corcoran.
Secretary Alger has asked the President to order a thorough inquiry into the War Department. General Corbin backs the move and Secretary Wilson attended the discussion. No decision yet. the Cabinet may consider it tomorrow.
At the final session of the National Association of Postoffice Clerks Thomas Onally of Brooklyn was named president Miss Mary A Lawler of Waterbury Conn secretary William Agnew of Cleveland treasurer and Robert M Powell of Detroit named as another officer Memphis was chosen as next year s meeting city and the convention adjourned.
