Southampton reports a violent dock strike culminating in infantry disarming the mob. Troops repelled attackers as rioters seized cabs, broke windows, and bayoneted horses. A mayoral riot act failed to quell the surge, with further clashes and a looming fear of renewed trouble.
Maine off year results show Governor Burleigh with a 19 000 plurality and Speaker Reed about 4800. Republican gains sweep county tickets and the next Legislature is likely 27 Republicans to 4 Democrats in the Senate and 120 Republicans to 1 Democrat in the House. A Dominion Trades Congress deputation urged Ottawa to curb Chinese entry and bar Chinese workers from mines. President F M Crunde of St Louis outlined a future policy as the group enters a new era of usefulness and prosperity. Wednesday schedules include catalogues classification readers aids and guides in the morning and an association of State librarians in the afternoon plus library architecture in the evening.
A New York meeting of the Union Prisoners of War National Memorial Association board and executive committee at the Fifth Avenue Hotel advanced plans for a memorial hall in Washington DC as a national military and naval museum. About thirty attended including Clara Barton and Horatio King. Decker opened the session and read regrets from invited literary figures before Barton urged support. The group then entered executive session to discuss fundraising action.
John Cordial of West Albany was brought to Troy jail on a charge of complicity in wrecking the Montreal express near Castleton last Thursday. He was guarded and jailed as Special Detective Humphrey investigated the case. And in Oswego, Powderly urged arbitration to prevent rail strikes and criticized the Central strike. He spoke to a large Knights of Labor crowd and denied a mass exodus rumor. In Aupany, sixty Delaware & Hudson yard workers struck, with thirteen returning to work and eight Knights of Labor switching back. In Finlay, brakemen and switchmen on the Toledo Cincinnati line walked out for higher wages, with authorities attempting to settle the dispute.
William Bardru known as Leroy Bailey, arrested in New York for a Boston burglary, was discharged in Jefferson Market Court due to flawed requisition papers. He was re arrested on the street and taken to police headquarters for new papers as Boston authorities prepare his return.
