Germans and Bulgarians capture fortress near Bucharest

The first major success of the Rumanian campaign sees German and Bulgarian forces seize Turtukai fortress 37 miles southeast of Bucharest. Heavy artillery shattered the works. over 20,000 Romanians were taken prisoner, including two generals and 400 officers, with more than 100 guns captured. The fall opens the Danube passage and a direct push toward Bucharest.

Rumanian gains on northern fronts cut Austrian positions

Romanian forces seized the Gyergo Duro Orsova pass with seven machine guns and key food stores. Northwest, Vienna admits a retreat as a Romanian encircling move pushed 20 miles into Hungarian territory. Heights near Dorna Watra and Olah Toplitza were ceded as Austrians fell back to higher ground.

Congress Adjourns After Nine Months of Legislation

Congress will adjourn at 10 o clock this morning after nine months of protracted sessions. The two houses approved their conference on the emergency revenue bill to raise about 200 million dollars for national defense and related emergency appropriations involving Mexico.

Proctor Granted Divorce in Quick Dedham Session

George W. Proctor of Brookline, a noted pianist and pupil of Mrs. John L. Gardner, won a divorce from Marguerite L. Proctor in the Dedham Superior Court on grounds of desertion. The proceedings last just over 15 minutes with no contest by the wife.

Judge Raymond presides as last case of day in divorce matter

Judge Raymond heard the case as the final docket item around 4 40 p m. Two witnesses testified with Mr Proctor and Edward C Leach an attorney who observed service of the divorce libel on Mrs Proctor after a 16 year acquaintance.

Fire injures lieutenant at Merrimack street blaze

Lieutenant Charles Fernald of Chem 1 fell four feet into an ash pit during a basement fire at 189 Merrimack street. He and several firemen were overcome by smoke. Fernald was rescued and taken to Relief Hospital. The blaze caused slight loss with entry via a freight elevator.

Senate broadens inquiry into news print costs

Washington Sept 7 The Senate adopted a resolution broadening the Federal Trade Commission inquiry into print paper costs to cover government printing office paper. Senator Fletcher said the cost of government document paper has risen more than 100 percent in the last year.

Milford Officer Fatally Shot While On Duty

Milford police Patrolman Harry W. Butler was shot and killed early this morning as he and Officer Patrick J. Duddy waited on Beach Street for intruders who had been disturbing residents at night.

Butler Shot in Ambush Questions Remain

Butler, a 30 year old officer, was killed after an ambush as six shots rang out. A man approached the officers moments before the attack and vanished after Butler fell. Milford police and volunteers formed a large cordon but found no suspects by 2:30 AM. He left a wife and three children.

Teachers Flock to City Hall for Pay in Boston

The city treasurer's department was crowded with school teachers collecting pay. About 2000 of 3900 Boston teachers came Monday and roughly 600 more sought their pay yesterday, leaving clerks relieved at closing time.
