French forces south of the Somme broke German positions along a four mile front from Vermandovillers to Chilly. German hold on Vermandovillers northern sector was abandoned as the French occupied the outskirts of Chaulnes and pushed along the Chaulnes Roye railway line between Chaulnes and Chilly.
Samuel A. Libby veteran balloonist dies after parachute fails at Rutland Fair Grounds. He fell 150 feet landing head first on a rear steps, his neck and back broken while 10 000 spectators watched. Witnesses include T H Flowers of the American Ballooning Company. Libby had sought his missing wife for years and leaves four brothers and three sisters.
Washington reports two vessels sunk in the European war zone with Americans aboard. Consuls in Glasgow and Barcelona confirm 28 Americans were aboard Kelvinia, rescued in Glasgow, while Stella Delmare's crew included two presumed Americans. whether saved is unclear. The State Department will investigate possible American rights violations.
Andrew Angier aged 64 an engineer with the Boston and Maine railroad fell forty feet from his engine during inspection near a trestle in South Acton last evening. He was found unconscious in the brook and rushed to Reliief Hospital in Boston with fractures to both arms and severe head bruises after striking rocks on impact. He lives at 44 Harvard street Charlestown.
New York report notes a one cent per gallon drop in gasolene wholesale price to 22 cents per gallon announced by Standard Oil. It marks the second reduction of the year, attributed to a heavy rise in crude oil production.

Edward E F Hale aged 14, grandson of Edward Everett Hale, is reported a victim of infantile paralysis. He and his parents are at their summer home on the Wakefield to Matunuck road. He fell ill September 4 and showed paralysis today. Dr. Roland Robinson of Wakefield is the attending physician.
Allied reports say French forces hit Barleux and aimed first for Peronne with success while southeast of Belloy en-Santerre French captured most of Berny en Santerre. Paris notes many prisoners as Berlin concedes losses near Clery. In Galicia Russians claim gains with 4500 prisoners and several fortifications taken.
General Funston said Pershing's expedition may join Carranza forces if Villa nears the American troops. No formal agreement exists for joint action. Carranza commander General Gonzales has already sent a force toward Villa, with Pershing’s role to be decided by Pershing. A code message from Funston to Pershing was sent late today.
Atlantic City N J Sept 6 The National Woman Suffrage Association wins an overwhelming vote to press equal rights through both national and state legislation after a lengthy debate. A resolution aimed at reopening the issue is introduced as applause fades.

Washington reports the conference committee agreed to remove all stamp taxes from the emergency revenue bill after House negotiators conceded. To offset about 5 million dollars in lost revenue, they expect to lift the net profit tax on munitions manufacturers from 10 to 12 1/2 percent, while forgoing a refiners tax.
