Luetgert Trial Highlights Strong Prosecution Evidence
In Chicago on September 7, two key witnesses bolstered the prosecution in the Luetgert trial. Nicholas Faber testified Luetgert and his wife entered the sausage factory on May 1, while Charles Hengst said he heard cries from inside the factory that night. Letters Luetgert wrote to Mrs Feldt amused the courtroom and unsettled the defendant. The defense challenged the introduction of fetters, but the judge ruled they proper. Faber’s map-crossing scene showed Luetgert’s temper as bailiffs restrained him from approaching the witness stand. Hengst, one of the few English speakers, remained firm that the cry was human. Fritz Figel recounted emptying ashes May 4 and James Smith found bone particles and two corset steels in the debris. Frederick Schuetz, age 71 and hard of hearing, testified to past quarrels where Luetgert allegedly threatened her life. The defense’s partial admission of his distance from the scene weakened that testimony.
