Miss Alice Clancy, a servant of Rev. James H. Van Buren, was nearly strangled by an unknown assailant on Park Street at 10 30 pm. A rope was slipped around her neck as she walked home from her cousin's. The attacker fled after her screams. The pastor found her hysterical at 11 pm. no description or clues available. Her cousin was attacked a week earlier on Blossom Street. Police are searching with no lead.
Newton Sept 7 A man identified as Richard Bates, 68, was found dead tangled in a live electrical wire on Pearl and Emerson streets. Dr J R McLaughlin received a shock while aiding, officer Burke freed the wire. Bates, long employed in real estate by Joseph N Bacon, left a widow and three daughters.
Washington dispatch notes Friday outlooks across New England. Maine expects showers then clearing, with southeast gales shifting to northwest. New Hampshire and Vermont see showers tonight then fair Friday, winds turning northwest. Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut and eastern New York should have fair Friday with diminishing northwest gales.
South Acton September 7. C M Steele's Boxboro residence burned this afternoon. Loss estimated at 2000 with 1200 insured. Fire officials are investigating cause.
Josiah Quincy of Massachusetts has resigned the office of Assistant Secretary of State. He accepted the post for a short service and to pursue leadership of the coming campaign after a recent Massachusetts Democratic committee meeting.
The son and daughter of John Simpson of Charles Town Mass identified the body found in the bay off Portsmouth Grove as their father. His wife has been insane for two years, and he feared sending her to an asylum. He left home to arrange care for her, became worn out, and the autopsy gave no definite sign of foul play, leading the medical examiner to verdict death by own action. The body was taken to Boston.
Beverly residents approved a city charter by 911 to 725 in a decisive vote announced at six oclock. The town celebrated with fish horns and fireworks as residents expressed strong approval of the change to city status.
At Metz on September 7 the bishop of Metz greeted Emperor William with joy over his Lorraine visit. He urged the ruler to be judged by actions, not hostile press reports, and to uphold religious spirit and morality to curb subversive ideas. Bath Me Sept 7 United States District Court cashier Fred L Kent of First National Bank Ellsworth pleaded guilty to embezzlement and received a ten year sentence at Thomaston.

Carrie Saunders and Michael Ahern of Boston were jailed in Bridgeport and bound over to the Superior Court on charges of assault with intent to kill James Gorman, a young Easton farm hand found beaten beside the highway two weeks earlier. Gorman is hospitalized and not speaking on the matter. the trio’s love triangle led to the alleged decoy and attack.
Thomas Brennan, 35, of 65 Suffolk Street, lies critically injured at Frost Hospital Chelsea after a fall from the roof of the Lamp Black Factory owned by Mr Cabot. He was found unconscious in the drying room about 10 36 last evening as a shower began and was sent to repair a leaking roof.
Belmont September 7 A painter's alcohol lamp ignited paint on the exterior of John Kilbourne's Clark street home causing $3000 in damage this afternoon The interior suffered extensive smoke and water damage The building was insured.

George Beakin 26 of 28 Dartmouth Street Roxbury broke his collar bone and two ribs after falling from a house roof on Dacia Street Roxbury yesterday afternoon. He was removed to City Hospital for treatment.
