Sunk Off Handkerchief Lightship Crew Escapes In Collision
The steamer Indian of Philadelphia lines collided with the three masted schooner Andrew J York between Cross Rip and Handkerchief Lightship near midnight. The York sank within minutes. its crew and the captain's family were rescued onto the Indian. The York, built in 1881 at Deering Me, carried paving stones from Clark's Island Me to New York and was 228 gross tons. The Indian proceeded to Boston with little damage, and the York’s wreck may be raised after diver inspection. Captain Nickerson, his wife and children survived. the Indian’s crew remained unharmed.
