Springfield Sept 4 A private despatch reports that company A ninth regiment of state militia returning from encampment met a dreadful accident on the St Louis and Evansville railroad between Corwin and Grayville. The train struck a herd of cattle and the car occupied by company D overturned killing nine and wounding fifteen. No further details are given.
The Shenandoah was moved from dry dock to the alongside shears for mast placement. Five marine recruits were enlisted at the marine barracks on Tuesday. Lieut. Col. C. D. Webb U S M C began a 30 day leave. Capt. R. W. Huntington U S M C will take command. Secretary William E handler visited the yard that day. Tallapoosa arrived for coal and KE P Lull returned from leave. Gunner William Young U S N received two months of leave.
By September 1 the New York building trade remained busy with architects contractors and builders taking on large contracts. For the first half of the year new buildings cost 31 792 800 dollars versus 27 999 305 the prior year and eight months ending September showed 44 972 920 invested. A suspect was arrested in Brunswick at 4 AM and a second man remains sought with a $1000 reward offered by the mayor. Deceased leaves a widow and four daughters.
Frost last night caused an estimated 125000 dollars in damage across Hampden Hampshire and Franklin counties. Whiteley and Deerfield suffered the heaviest losses with about 25000 dollars in tobacco growers in each area. Some fields are total losses and will be plowed under.

Mrs. Mary Young of Bangor Maine celebrated her 100th birthday. She was born in Lee New Hampshire and married at 17 to Benjamin Young. They moved to Waterford Vermont where 13 children were born. nine sons and four daughters all lived to adulthood and had families. Eight of the children attended the celebration along with 65 grandchildren 110 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
Porter street in West Roxbury saw a serious assault on Monday night when Gotleib Burkhardt armed with a large knife attacked his friend Emes McCormack at Burkhardt's home. McCormack sustained deep neck wounds close to the jugular. Burkhardt was arrested and a hearing before Judge Howard was postponed for a week due to McCormack's condition.

Tuesday morning Detective Bagley arrested a man calling himself George Chapman in A. D. Nichols store on Purchase Street as a suspicious person. He was suspected after avoiding payment of a breakfast check at the Point of Pine hotel on Sunday morning. Chapman, a Leeds resident, claimed to be a weather merchant and denied leaving Montreal with large unpaid bills. He was discharged by Captain Ham as there was not sufficient evidence to hold him.
