Served as secretary to Nutciature in Spain 1883 1887 secretary to Cardinal Rampolla 1901 substitute secretary of state six years adviser to Holy Office. Named papal nuncio at Madrid briefly then archbishop of Bologna. In May consistory he received red hat and took title of Cardinal Lambertini. Benedict XIV born Bologna, echoing his archbishop see. Full title includes Pope Bishop of Rome Successor of St Peter etc.
