A cable greeting to Pope Leo XIII was sent and amendments to the constitution were referred to the committee on constitution. A reception followed in the Brownson Lyceum.
New York September 3. Thomas B. Musgrave a longtime Wall Street figure could not meet financial contracts. He declares his office will not receive deliveries due to market inability. Estimates place losses between 500000 and 1000000 with paper profits of over 250000 erased.
Telegrams report Andrew Price wins the third congressional district race by a large majority over H Minor. Deputy Sheriff Jacobs is shot at the Franklin polls after drawing a pistol in a disturbance. The shooter is unknown. the wound may not be fatal and no further disturbances occurred.
Police Officer James H. Lyons was shot at close range by a man described as a negro and by John Fellows in the Eureka road house area near Methuen. Lyons survived a scalp wound and a second shot to the left ear as neighbors intervened, with Charles Fellows’s bartender held and John Fellows at large. Authorities from Salem and Methuen pursue the fugitive while the Eureka House is ringed by officers.
Fire aboard the Bay of Naples bound for India with kerosene cargo was fought by the Havemeyer flood disabling about half the cargo with a $25000 loss. Separate Great Falls dispatch notes Barker town nearly wiped out by blaze with several deaths. Other small fires in New York and Somerville caused modest damages totaling under $5000.
Mrs Swinton and her son Joshua A Mann detained at New York police headquarters charged with conspiracy in the Atlantic City Hamilton case. Mrs Swinton confesses the infant cited by Mr Hamilton was bought for ten dollars and Mann admits knowledge of the deception. The New York grand jury adjourned without action in the Flack case and divorce papers were reviewed before resuming today.
