In Chatham on Sept 2 a large Republican caucus defeated Mr. Crapo. Delegates chosen were W. L. Nickerson and Thomas S. Arey, seen as favoring Mr. Brackett. Postmaster Gifford spoke in praise of Crapo and tried to bind delegates for him, but the motion failed by a large margin.
A detuned ledger of ships with Sept 1 to Sept 4 movements shows vessels such as Caledonia, Seneca, Neptuno and Belgenland arriving or sailing from ports including New York, Liverpool, Glasgow, London, Southampton, Havre and Antwerp. Names include Jamai can Coila from Port Antonio and several liners from Canada, the Med, and the Caribbean.
London reports show dock workers split as mobs intimidate crews at Albert docks and Medway convicts unload ships. Government blamed, Burns urged aggression, relief funds under strain while Gladstone aids strikers. Tailors strike, shipowners pressed for self-discharge power and wage talks continue.

The German Roman Catholic Society opens its thirty-fourth annual convention in Cleveland with 700 delegates from 26 states and 489 organizations, totaling 88,996 members. A $124,343 sick-benefits and $899,108 for 600 deaths report is cited. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Illinois delegates protest Rome demonstrations and parochial-school laws. Catholic day is set for tomorrow.
New York September 2 A large crowd attended the sale of Scoggan & S Bryant horses in the paddock at Sheepshead Bay before the racing. Names and prices include Proctor Knott to W A Faires 17100 Hinlop Graft to T R Tompkins 11700 Come-to-Taw to M Kellar 5260 Uncle Bob to Tom Kellar 2550 Obin Hood to R P Ashe 1900 Bettina to W A Faires 1250. Thirteen head sold for 48185 bringing total receipts.
In Fart River on September 2, school children rebelled when officials opened schools on a labor holiday. The High School pupils met a lawyer, and a chairman apologized, granting them a holiday. Meanwhile Rocky Point Clam House waiters struck for 50 cents extra pay, but some patrons were not affected as pay was adjusted for non-striking workers. Local labor unions expressed sympathy with the manager and denounced the strike.

The funeral for Engineer Embrey, killed in Friday night collision near Middlebury, was conducted in Norwich. A special two-car train from St. Albans carried engineers and the St Albans Lodge I O O F to the graveside. Services at the grave were under the O C F. a boy choir sang and Embrey’s Episcopal Church work in St. Albans was noted.
The U S Senate committee began hearings in Chicago on applying the interstate commerce law to livestock and dressed meats. Senators West Coke and Farwell heard testimony from railroad officials and dealers noting a sharp fall in cattle prices without a drop in meat prices.
Judge Thayer today held that counterfeiting the union label used on cigars cannot be prevented or punished. The decision, issued in St Louis, impacts the cigar makers' union in the United States and Canada, practically declaring the label of no value and affecting their organization seriously.

St Louis on September 2 reports the public unveiling of Henry Shaw's will dated June 24, 1885. The substantial estate allocation favors the city, directing the bulk of property to municipal ownership and the Botanical Garden legacy.
A series of fires reported overnight damaged several properties. In Parker Street rear of cor, a stable owned by Martin Hazey sustained 40 dollars in damage after an alarm from Box 249. A separate fire at Walter J. Dunham’s grocery on Shawmut Avenue caused slight damage and was extinguished by Engine 3. A dwelling at 21 Spring Street suffered 35 dollars in damage from children playing with matches. occupants extinguished the blaze. At Harbor Grace’s Catholic Cathedral, the building burned to the ground with an estimated 150000 dollars in losses and no insurance. In Controocoos, a barn owned by Walter Felch burned in Henniker with unknown cause and about 500 dollars lost.
Kansas City Sept 2 Last night the wife of William B Hanna was separated from him and believed kidnapped by confidence men. Hanna a green city man, paid a detective to arrest him, then saw a well dressed man claim arrest. He and his wife met at a restaurant opposite the police station. The stranger followed, Hanna gave a dollar to avoid arrest, and the wife vanished. Pinkerton men pursue a possible officer impostor conspiracy with a $500 reward offered for information.
St Louis Cable and Western railway faces severe financial trouble with reports of $300,000 in suits next week. Boston bankers Lee Higginson & Co hold $150,000 against the road and reportedly advanced similar sums to save the investment. Other major creditors include Continental Bank of St Louis, Roebling Sons, Walker Manufacturing of Cleveland, and New England Life. The line, built years ago, linked an Indianapolis stock effort and a steam railroad, with a now-troubled history and delays wired to Taylor avenue. litigation appears likely.
The mother of John L. Sullivan was buried in Mt. Calvary after a high mass at St. Patrick's Church Mt. Pleasant. The church was filled with family and sporting men close to the famous son. Rev J H Gallagher led services as hacks followed the procession. flowers were abundant including anchors, doves, roses and a harp.
President Harrison names George O. Eaton of Montana as surveyor general and John Little of Ohio as commissioner for the United States in the Venezuelan Claims Commission. He will be in Washington for tomorrow's meeting and the H arrison couple enjoyed their afternoon drive to Oakland. Colonel Vernon of Baltimore and James A Waymire of San Francisco paid social calls.

Darwin A. Henry, superintendent of construction for the East River Electric Light Company, was instantly killed this afternoon by a shock from a live wire during company work. He was an expert electrical engineer.
Grerry s Bourg Sept 2 Brooklyn Day on the battlefield saw memorial dedications by the Fourth New York Cavalry and the Tenth New York Infantry. Mark D. Wilbur delivered the oration.
Arrivals include the fishing schooner Benjamin Oliver from Block Island with 185 barrels of mackerel and the schooner Canopus with 15 barrels. Reports note large quantities of small mackerel in Barnstable Bay last week, many fish too small for sale, suitable only for bait or canning.
