Comparison of pauper relief in 1837 and 1856
The Illustrated News reports a weekly comparison showing a decrease of 2.4 to 3.1 percent in paupers relieved in England and Wales in 1856 versus 1837. The note states that the decline applies to both indoor and outdoor relief, and it does not provide figures for paupers who died of starvation in 1897 or 1956.
