Simon Kenton a dark horse won the $15,000 pacing derby at Readville, finishing a length ahead of rival Simon Kenton after a long handicap race with 18 horses in front. Owned by Attleboro blacksmith John M. Simpson, the big black stallion moved from 180 feet behind the limit to the lead just before the homestretch.
The Cunard liner Lusitania completed the Queenstown to New York voyage in four days eleven hours and forty two minutes, beating Mauretania's speed and becoming the first to dock on the fourth day out. She averaged 25.85 knots, with daily legs totaling 2784 nautical miles, and left Daunt's Rock last Sunday at 10 AM.
Hugh McLean renowned bicycle rider and sport promoter died at his Chelsea home at 12 45 this morning from injuries sustained while training at his Revere Beach track for his race with Collins scheduled for tomorrow night.
Mr. McLean, paced by a motor cycle, collided when the front wheel entangled in the motor’s roll. He suffered a compound skull fracture and was found unconscious after a fast ride. The 28 year old was a middle-distance world champion and a prominent six day rider with international wins.
Detroit completes a league record by sweeping all Eastern teams in the Western series. Chicago tops St. Louis and Cleveland, New York splits doubleheaders while Boston Doves win the first game against Pittsburg 1 0 marking their 1909 victory over the Pirates. Pittsburg takes the second game 3 2. New York loses to St. Louis as Chicago falls to Brooklyn and Cincinnati splits with Philadelphia. Worcester moves to second in the New England league race after Brockton beats Lawrence. Hevella, the German yacht, wins the sen der race. Margarethe II is noted.
Mrs Jessie Livingstone Forbes of Fairfield Conn and New York is named in a $75,000 alienation of affections suit filed by Mrs Ida Rowley. Rowley claims her husband Ernest, a Forbes chauffeur, was diverted from his wife by Forbes wife and attributes the act to blackmail.
Mr Forbes says the case is blackmail as he denies employing his former chauffeur for over two and a half years. He alleges the chauffeur’s wife has pressed for money and that Mrs Forbes has handed all letters to him. He vows to stand by his wife to the end.
Washington forecast dated September 2 predicts increasing cloudiness Friday into Saturday for New England with light variable winds and generally fair weather conditions. Steamers sailing Friday toward Europe are also set to have light variable winds and fair conditions toward the Grand Banks.
The thermometer at Thompson's Spa on 210 Washington Street recorded yesterday's temperatures with an average of 61. One year ago yesterday the average was 68.

Mrs. Robert E. Peary, at Eagle Island in Casco Bay, tells a Post reporter that she is surprised Dr. Cook reached the pole so quickly with limited help. She says the claim steals her husband’s honor but offers congratulations to Cook.
