American forces pierced German defenses north of Soissons and moved into Juvigny on the Aisne front. The victory expands the line east of the village as artillery dominates the surrounding terrain and German resistance wanes. German officers were outmaneuvered and troops outfought.
British forces seize Peronne while French advance in the south. Germans retreat in Lys sector near Lens with fires behind enemy lines signaling a broad withdrawal. Australians take about 2000 prisoners in the capture of Peronne, clearing the Ypres sector.
President Wilson declares all Americans as enlisted in a single army until victory in World War I. He stresses labor and soldiers share obligation to win the war and shape free nations, calling Labor Day 1918 supremely significant as workers are champions of justice. Continued on Page 7.
In August a reported 97,000 prisoners were counted as taken by British forces. A ten percent disobedience rate emerged concerning the auto riding ban, indicating ongoing resistance to the policy.
The Associated Press reports continued Allied advances along the western front. German positions in front of entente forces are yielding ground as two-month-old salients are flattened or blotted out, with the Marne and Picardy sectors largely reclaimed and Haig’s forces pressing on the Lys salient southwest of Ypres.

German Chancellor von Hertling urged a united home front to prevent enemy optimism over a possible peace by understanding. He appealed to the Almighty and warned against domestic criticism that could embolden the foe as Allied successes press the war’s pace.

In Washington on September 1 the President and Mrs Wilson traveled to church behind a pair of handsome bags as the fuel administration bans unnecessary Sunday automobile use take effect. Today recalls Eugene Field born 1850 and several 1914 events including the Russian capture of a French army and emperor prisoners, the British steamer Eyrion sunk by a mine, Japan sending 10000 troops to Shantung, and a Russian victory at Lemberg after seven days. One year ago the Austrian Cabinet was reorganized.
Forecast calls for fair conditions in southern New England on Monday and Tuesday with little temperature change and gentle to moderate winds. Northern New England should see fair weather Monday with cooler conditions on the western coast and Tuesday remained fair.
Mrs. Bessie May Skeels faces trial charged with causing the death of Miss Florence Gay of Dover by poisoning. Her Boston attorney Daniel J. Daley asserts strong evidence will prove her innocence as the defense organizes its case to refute all allegations and show she may be the victim of a peculiar chain of circumstances.
The defense argues Gay’s death was natural, arsenic found in her stomach came from a skin medicine, and Fowler's solution in Skeels’ effects was the same medicine. Several friends from Lawrence Methuen and this town assert Skeels’ innocence, including Margaret Hooper who boarded with her.
