Washington reports the next Liberty Loan campaign may open on October 1 with subscription books closing November 1 unless changed. Details on amount interest rate and bond denomination will follow after Congress acts on the pending bond bill.
More than 3800 Boston & Maine railroad mechanics walked out after talks at North Station. They demanded an eight cent an hour raise and rule changes. A compromise of six cents an hour was recommended by Rollin B. Mahaney, sent by Labor Secretary William B. Wilson.
Indications point to a next offering near three billion dollars. Whether government advertising via paid newspapers will proceed is under study as Secretary McAdoo says the cost would exceed the current appropriation. Action awaits clearer cost data and Congress deciding the advertising limit.
One man died and two others escaped unharmed when a trench collapsed at the corner of Atlantic and Northern avenues. Genna Natale, 24, of 46 Norman Street, was buried under stones and debris and died at Relief Hospital. Alexander Morella, 16 Fleet Street, escaped by digging to the surface. workers Eugene Shea and Antonio Céffali leaped to safety.
The Provincetown relief fund for widows and orphans of 19 fishermen lost at sea on Aug 10 has surpassed 14 000 dollars. Gifts from many communities keep arriving to provide food fuel and support for the children and the 19 widows through the coming winter.
Yesterday further sympathy was shown to the Post through donations from diverse supporters. Contributions came from both affluent individuals and working people with modest means.
Miss Hattie McDaniels, 35, of 9 Watson Street Cambridge, was killed when struck by an automobile on Massachusetts Avenue near Windsor Street Cambridge. Her body was identified by cousin Mrs Maud Maytum. The driver Howard H Bettison, 22, of 3 Highland Park Cambridge, was arraigned on manslaughter and released on $1000 bonds.
Florence M. Bradley a wealthy Bangor social figure was arrested in Cambridge for driving under the influence after her car collided with William S. Stearns’ automobile off Walnut avenue Roxbury The 39 year old fiance Henry J Hart general counsel for Bangor and Aroostook railroad was to wed today The incident followed months of public chatter in Bangor
Germany prepares for land and sea offensive on Riga after failing to break the Russian front. Torpedo boats submarines and mine sweepers operate in adjacent waters while ninety air raids target the Gulf of Riga. No official word on carnage or renewed infantry actions west of Riga.
Boston draft divisions move ahead with advance guard of the national army. Local boards will certify 5 percent of each division's liable men before considering exemption appeals and send lists of nonexempted men to the adjutant-general for immediate certification and early entrainment to camp.
The board certified five percent of local quotas in Division 1 East Boston Division 3 in Back Bay Division 7 in Dorchester and Division 4 in Roxbury.
Representatives of the employees agreed to a offer but the railroad said the increase was impossible and proposed two cents an hour instead. The strike follows with statements from both sides detailing events and positions. The railroad in receivership says workers refused to wait for court presentation while employees deny referencing the court. The strike will affect almost every round house on the system.
Miss Agnes Calligan of Stafford Springs Conn was killed when the automobile her brother in law Walter H Tobin Holyoke Mass was riding in fell 49 feet down an embankment near Dummerston. Tobin was only slightly injured. The car dropped four times and landed right side up after crumbling embankment gave way on a hill as they slowed for an oncoming vehicle. Calligan was 21 years old.
Rome Aug 30 Pope Benedict will continue efforts for peace after President Wilson's reply to his peace proposals was presented at the Vatican. Monsignor Cerretti, newly appointed assistant secretary of state, took the document to the Pope.

Washington August 31 Herbert Hoover food administrator said the best the public may expect is a 10 cent loaf for 16 ounces or possibly eight cents. The eight cent loaf is possible only if bakers retailers and consumers unite to eliminate wasteful distribution and to obtain a standardized loaf.
Mr Hoover argued family flour should drop by at least two to three dollars a barrel given current wheat prices, while bakers' flour would not fall much.
