Red Cross-chartered Hamburg ship to sail for Europe

The American Red Cross chartered the Hamburg America liner Hamburg to become the Red Cross and sail Saturday for Europe. Rear Admiral Aaron Ward will command. 150 to 275 doctors and nurses will accompany, with hospital supplies for a transatlantic relief mission.

German Losses Run 20 to 1 in Big Fight

Paris reports an officer wounded in northern engagements states German casualties outnumber Allied losses by 20 to 1. He cites massed infantry charges and three inch guns delivering unprecedented slaughter as a decisive factor in the field filled with dead and wounded.

France to muster 609000 more men for active service

Paris August 31 2 10 PM Additional French forces totaling 609000 men will be ready for active service in about six weeks after the decision to call out the 1914 young men and the elder classes of the reservists was announced yesterday.

Ottawa Ont August 31 The Canadian cruiser Niobe goes into active service tomorrow sailing from Halifax on a short trial voyage to test and tune her machinery after overhaul following three years of idleness. The cruiser will soon join the squadron of British cruisers patrolling the Atlantic coast.

Wild chase of stolen Massachusetts car across border

McWilliams couple injured when a stolen car driven by O'Brien and Stone crashed through Gard ner & Co. and damaged a Murchie carriage. They fled to St Stephen NB then were stopped by a customs officer. Car confiscated. The pair later stole a horse and wagon at Bonney River before arrest. They await extradition to Boston to face auto theft charges.

Japanese Destroyer Abandoned on Rocks at Tsingtau

A Japanese torpedo destroyer ran ashore on Lieu Tau island during fog near Tsingtau. German gunboat Jaguar fired eight hits into the stranded ship and returned without incident. The crew reportedly abandoned the destroyer as four Japanese destroyers and a cruiser maintained the blockade.
