The Post reports German forces within 80 miles of Paris after breaching outer defences. French and British troops retreat seven miles daily, with heavy German losses but continued advance. German air raids threaten Paris while calls go out for elderly reserves. Allies struggle to prevent Paris isolation.
London reports a four day clash in France where British forces under Sir John French fought to hold lines and withdraw to new defensive positions. Casualties are estimated between 5000 and 6000 while French troops on both flanks halted the German offensive.
A fragmented war update notes Koenigsberg reportedly captured with other fronts in Europe. Official and unofficial dispatches mention Turkish entry, British losses, and German advances. Arms actions span Thorn Grandens Helgoland St Quentin and Paris bombing.
Thousands of houses shops and factories are being blown up to clear the field for the Paris forts. The explosions are heard faintly sixteen to eighteen miles away as Paris fortifications are reinforced.
A Paris despatch reports a German aviator flew over Paris dropping five bombs in the city’s most populated quarters. Wounded included two women near Rue Albauy and Rue Des Vinaigriers. Two bombs fell near Quai de Valmy. others hit Rue des Recollets and Rue Marcin but did not explode. The pilot signed as Lieutenant von Heidssen and left manifestos claiming German forces at Paris gates.
In the pre-dawn hours the old lumber schooner Pearl Nelson was waterlogged and battered for ten hours in a northeast gale off Massachusetts Bay near Plum Island. The vessel and crew were reported lost as fog and night closed in.
Ostend August 31 a German officer says no fewer than 800000 German troops passed through Brussels. One third of the force was diverted from the planned route to impress the people of the Belgian capital with the Kaiser's military power.
Thousands gathered at Faneuil Hall in Boston for a German American mass meeting protesting anti Germanism. Matthew Cummings urged Irish support for Germany against Britain, while Robert Sturn chaired. Resolutions drafted by Max Otto von Klock praised unity with the fatherland amid wartime tensions.
To the north of Liege a considerable but hard to estimate number of Germans have crossed the Meuse and are moving toward Germany from Ostend dated Aug 30.
London reports the allied armies are apparently defeated with Paris in peril. German artillery could strike Paris within a week if no unforeseen miracle intervenes. The Meusefront fighters push forward while British and French forces fall back toward a rout in the north.
