Breakthrough opens Pacific end canal to Miraflores locks
Equally notable as the explosion was the barrier breach this afternoon. By 1 25 o'clock the water level reached the gap top then a trench formed and water trickled through. A 65 foot fall followed as a 400 foot wide opening flood the canal section between Gamboa dike and Mira flores locks. The 5000 by 500 by 41 foot cut was filled by 3 o'clock, saving Mirafiores masonry. Dredges worked tonight and will remove the last Atlantic barrier by Sept 2 enabling ships to reach the locks from both oceans.
