The Panther lands 106 Ninth Massachusetts troops at Montauk Point. Sixteen soldiers die at sea aboard the Alleghany, with 145 more sick among 480 aboard. Doctors report no contagion as 24 panther sick reach the dock for urgent care.
Private John F. Daley of Company A died as the port was reached and was taken on board the hospital ship with the sick. He will be buried on shore. Lieutenant Davane of Company FE is in charge of the sick. Peter F. Sullivan reports many deaths, per the Post’s correspondent.
Lieutenant-Colonel Henry confessed forging a key Dreyfus incriminating letter used against Major Esterhazy’s supporters. While under arrest he cut his throat, shocking France and reviving calls for a new Dreyfus trial and a review of the Zola affair. General Boisdeffre resigned as fallout.
The hospital ship Olivette sank about 7:30 this morning near the Fernandina quarantine station with twenty five hospital corps and forty five crew aboard. all escaped injury. Salvage efforts and an official explanation from the War Department follow the loss, with the owning company offering to raise the vessel. The ship had recently transported soldiers from Santiago to Boston and Philadelphia and was chartered by the government.
Yesterday's heat signs the coming of ideal vacation weather in Boston. Weather men predict continued warmth with cooler nights ahead. A light overcoat is advised for evening outings to avoid chills and colds during the seasonal change.
The governor released correspondence with Colonel Woodward over the Sixth Massachusetts Infantry controversy. Woodward says a board for efficiency discharged officers after a month’s pay, without charges, amid march hardships and alleged mismanagement in Puerto Rico.
Governor Wolcott reports a Friday Boston harbor parade of ships led by Captains Ludlow Goodrich McCalla Shaw Mead Day ton Berry Todd Swinburne Symonds Clover Cowles Pillsbury and Dunlap. He plans consulting with officers and a possible public reception in Faneuil Hall if conditions allow.
The Post reports Boston will host a land parade of officers and sailors from the upcoming warships if troops are fit. Gov Wolcott endorses the event aimed at honoring those who served at sea and contributed to the naval campaign against Spain. The plan follows prior calls by the Poet and newspaper to show the heroes and ships to the public.
Portsmuth August 31. Pa master Diaz who arrived with Admiral Cervera to visit Spanish prisoners had his rank taken for insulting a guard officer and is now confined in the stockade at Seavey’s Island.
