Senator David Bennett Hill publicly supports John E. Russell of Massachusetts after the repeal vote. Hill praises Russell as a Democrat and a brilliant statesman, saying the repeal vote will help his candidacy.
An armed laborer, Francis Bradley, shot Superintendent Frederick L. Mathias at the Postal Telegraph Company site on Broadway and Murray. Bradley was overpowered after a gunfight with Officers Giblin and Correll, while Mathias lay gravely wounded and near death.
A telegraph operator named Maragolia Afi dréws visited Edwin Gould at the Western Union building and demanded $5000. He claimed losses from a railroad strike and was handcuffed by a detective after a brief confrontation. The man was taken to the Central office.
Sir John Abbott former Prime Minister of Canada died in Montreal at 9 o clock this evening after surgery for a bowel cancer. The end was peaceful and a funeral will be held on Thursday.
President McLeod of the New York and New England railroad will arrive in Boston this morning. The regular meeting of the board of directors will be held at the company's offices, 18 Summer Street, with important business expected.
Antonio Rubio and Antonio Chicabaro residents of the Italian quarter had a confrontation on North street last evening. Rubio seized an axe and chased Chicabaro through North street while making several failed attempts to strike him. The pursuit ended when Rubio was captured by a Division 1 officer.
