General Margallo chief of Spanish forces in Melilla dies from a heart shot during a bold assault on Rif tribesmen. Reinforcements in motion as Ortega and 3,000 troops recapture trenches near Fort Cabrerizas amid fierce night fighting.
Frank Horton, former employee, was attacked with a cleaver by Michael A. Curry at Curry's South Boston market. Horton, injured and bloodied, told reporters he did not strike first and that he was charged with drunkenness by police. The case heads to municipal court.
Captain Delaney at Charles Street station adopts 5-year-old Louis Clausing as a police mascot. Louis, often visiting his mother and siblings at 191 Charles Street, wears a regulation uniform and drills with Sergeant Wiegan and Patrolman Perkins. The captain approves the arrangement as Louis learns baton handling and marching past duties.

Sam Scranton well known as a trainer of field dogs and game cocks died this afternoon of heart disease at the old Bennett Tavern on Plainfield Pike near Thorn ton. He was about 60 years old and proprietor of the tavern.
Damien Messier, 39, of Chicopee Falls, found dead in a Holyoke canal this morning after traveling from Chicopee yesterday to borrow money. Friends suspect foul play though no violence marks were found. He leaves a wife and five children.
Alderman Walter F Ward of Marquette faces a Boston shooting incident after a confrontation with a crowd on Green Street. Thomas McManus is hospitalized with three wounds, uncertain if Ward will be charged as the hearing is set for the morning. McManus is described as a tough character with a troubled background and a prior theft accusation. Ward’s companion Downing and two trainmen left town after the incident.
John Jacob Astor has given his sister Mrs Coleman Drayton one million dollars and a Fifth Avenue house in New York. The gift follows the Drayton Borrowe Paris scandal that affected the Astor family. Hallett Borrowe has been abroad, rumored to receive a paternal allowance subject to conditions.
Polycarpe Dione is under arrest charged with man slaughter. The victim, Joseph C. Gautre, a young French boy of Flint Village, lived at 2 Bassett street. Gautre opened a club room door to annoy men. Dione chased him and struck the head, fracturing the skull.

The Russian fleet departed Toulon at 2 PM heading for Ajaccio in Corsica. Admiral Avelan will sail from Ajaccio to Naples for a probable three day stay before continuing to Piraeus in Athens.
