A defect in insulation on an electric wire ignited woodwork above the doorway of the Massachusetts Boot and Shoe Company at 12 Tremont Row. Captain Ryan and store employees extinguished the fire, with slight damage. Another alarm from Box 16 at 3:30 pm reported a supposed fire at 15 South Market Street. no damage.
The steamer Colorado of the Maullory line, sailing from New York to Galveston, returned disabled after losing her rudder and post in a gale off Florida. The sister ship San Antonio towed her to New York. Repair will take thirty days at a cost of $10,000. All passengers are safe.
