Austro-German forces deliver strenuous push against Cadorna’s Italian army. Two great wedges thrust into the eastern and northeastern fronts while a third offensive starts in the north to trap Italian retreat efforts.
Mark E. Requa told 4000 Tre mont Temple attendees that the nation wastes six times Germany’s level and women must curb waste as part of the food conservation drive. Mayor Curley opened the event with Governor McCall and leaders including Endicott, Mrs. Nathaniel Thayer, and Miss Sarah Louise Arnold present.
Mr Requa presented figures from Washington on the need to supply over 350 million bushels of wheat to allied countries in Europe. He urged the nation to cut wheat use by one pound weekly and substitute other grains. Continued on Page 5 First Column.
A parliamentary resolution extends the banks of the nation to the navy the army overseas troops mercantile marine and to women in medical and auxiliary services. The motion also expresses sympathy to the relatives and friends of those who have given their lives for their country.
John Redmond praised Irish troops for fighting for liberty at home and civilization in Europe. Premier Lloyd George moved a resolution noting the deeds admired by all. He likened the navy to a vital organ and called it the anchor of the war effort. Continued on Page 4-Third Column.
A German prisoner of war captured near American trenches in France died in an American field hospital after being shot by patrols. He claimed to have lost his way in the dark while carrying mail, revealing that German soldiers knew little of American forces. He described officers wanting the war to continue and that mail delays affected troops. American batteries shelled German lines as snow hindered operations.
The food administration announced a plan to stop profiteering by retail dealers in foodstuffs after November 1. Licensed manufacturers wholesalers and other food handlers will be barred from selling to distributors seeking undue profits to ensure reasonable margins and cut off supplies to violators.
An official statement hailed the measure as one of the most sweeping safeguards against high prices to be incorporated in the licensing system. It promised complete rules and regulations to be announced within a few days.
A melee erupted in Scollay Square when a civilian called a sailor from Commonwealth Pier a hard-boiled egg. Sailors and civilians clashed for over 20 minutes from Tremont Street to Cornhill before a provost guard and police restored order. Four sailors were arrested. no civilians were taken into custody.
Herbert S. Bigelow a pacifist Socialist and head of the People's Church of Cincinnati was horsewhipped near Florence Kentucky by masked men in Ku Klux style attire claiming action in the name of Belgian women and children. He remained in serious condition tonight.
Washington reports the President uses only one eye for reading after a strain that nearly blinded him. He visits his oculist in Philadelphia several times yearly to adjust glasses for efficiency and reduced eye strain while reading state papers. The White House practice requires subordinates to submit written plans rather than present them in person.
German official communications say Austro German forces push along the Isonzo from the gulf to Tolmino and beyond as Italians retreat from Udine toward the Adriatic. General Otto von Buelow leads Teutons, with reports of Cividale and Cormons fall and the Italian line collapsing south to the Adriatic.
In addition to wedges at the east and northeast fronts, Teutonic allies launch a third wedge through the Ploecken Pass intending to cut off the retreat of General Cadorna's western and southwestern bound forces.
Washington reports a hearing with the Broadway Association on saving coal for the war. A compromise plan may delay Broadway lights to 8 p m this winter instead of lighting at 4 30 or 5 p m, as before.
A steam er carrying U S Senators John D Kendrick Wyoming and William S Kenyon Iowa and Representatives John J Rogers Massachusetts and James S Parker New York was attacked by a German submarine off the Wales coast. The gunners fired as the sub submerged and the Americans joined other Congressmen here tonight.
Thomas F. Ryan New York financier and Mrs Cornelius C Cuyler of New York married in Charlottesville Virginia at Holy Comforter Church with Rev Thomas A Rankin officiating. Dr E Alderman president of the University of Virginia and Mrs Alderman were witnesses. Ryan's first wife Ida M Barry of Baltimore died on the 17th of this month.
Mr Ryan aged 66, director of several railroads and corporations, led street railway development in New York and Chicago, developed mine properties in WV and OH, gained controlling stake in Equitable Life in 1905, with extensive holdings in Virginia. After the ceremony they left for Mr Ryan’s country estate near here.
