On a river journey in China a small houseboat named Quadre with five Americans was attacked by pirates at midnight. Mrs Dolan woke to gunfire and Mr Dolan fired back with rifles, driving off the assailants after a brief exchange. The group, including three other Americans, defended the vessel through the night until the pirates withdrew.
