Railroad Man Is Promoted in New England Line

John Rouke, assistant superintendent of the southern division of the Boston and Maine railroad, was named superintendent of the Portland division to replace Charles E. McMullin who retired. Frank P. Fosgate will become southern division head in Rouke’s place and will oversee the Portsmouth electric railway.

Jail Wareham Man in Mail Fraud Case

Onset October 24 George M Caldwell of Wareham was arrested by U S Deputy Marshal Ruhl on charges of using the mails to defraud merchants by fictitious names to obtain credit goods from Golden Chemical Company Medford Md and other wholesalers. He awaits hearing November 5 and was bailed at 300 by U S Commissioner Goodspeed.

Bangor express derails near North station on drawbridge

A Bangor express train No 40 rolling toward North station jumped the track on the drawbridge yesterday afternoon. Baggagemaster Williams pulled the emergency cord and halted the 11 car train just before it would have plunged into the river. Car 1593 a day coach derailed but no one was seriously hurt. Tower A horn signaled engines to stop as Conductor Henry Russell and Engineer Walter Gowen managed the incident.

Nome appeal seeks $50,000 for winter relief

The Nome Alaska mayor in a cable gram to Seattle Chamber of Commerce said many residents are destitute after a storm damaged the city and would need aid or transportation. He asked for government help and estimated $50,000 needed to get Nome through the long winter.

Man Confesses Involved In 10 Stabbings At Bath

A signed confession from Baho Hiro details stabbing Kassem Souleyman once in the back, linked to the murder by Raseoul Lackoli who was sentenced to life. Hiro says Lackoli threatened him, paid $50 of more than $325 taken from Souleyman, and Hiro faces supreme court arraignment after grand jury indictment for murder.

Touring Car kills Hope Valley boy in Rhode Island

Charles Jeffreys six years old was struck by a touring car while returning from school in Hope Valley Rhode Island on October 29. Owner George B Chadwick of Providence and chauffeur Renny Hargreaves were detained by Deputy Sheriff George H Barber pending investigation.

James Hunter known as Daredevil Jimmy, a noted motorcycle racer, was granted a divorce from Bessie in Suffolk Superior Court yesterday after he filed suit alleging desertion. The action proceeded without contest.

Woman charged after shot at home defense in front of child

Mrs. Clara Trus gillo of 14 Cooper street faced court on an assault charge after a man was shot at her home while her 2 year old child Rosie played on the floor. The coal dealer Michele Fielle was the alleged target. Trus gillo was held on $500 bond for a further hearing next Friday as the child remained unharmed.

Woman says she shot man to defend honor in coal dispute

Mrs Trulgillo declares she fired at Fielle to protect her honor during a quarrel over an alleged unpaid coal bill. Fielle lies wounded in hospital. he says the dispute involved alleged liberties during coal delivery. She fled with her baby, later aided by neighbors, and conflicting accounts emerged as police questioned husband and victim.

National Woman's Christian Temperance Union Opens In Asbury Park

The 40th annual convention of the National Women's Christian Temperance Union began in Asbury Park N J with executive meetings. Delegates from across the United States and abroad attend through Nov 6. President Mrs William M N Stevens of Portland Me will deliver the annual address Friday. A rally Saturday will feature Miss Amy Swankie Cameron of London England. Delegate turnout is expected at 500 with daily attendance in the thousands as visitors arrive from the world W C T U convention held in Brooklyn Monday.

Mrs McCormick Urges Suffragists to Study Tactics

Mrs Medill McCormick of Chicago spoke at the Equal Suffrage Association for Good Government luncheon at the Hotel Vendome urging Massachusetts suffragists to master parliamentary procedure and learn opposition tricks. She outlined 22 years of lobbying, a card index of lawmakers, and rapid telegram pressure to secure votes. Helen Todd compared Western and Eastern suffrage battles and praised Californian efforts.
