Exchange. Stock market mixed on rail bonds plan

Stocks edged lower with Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe quoted around 67 74. A proposed consolidation of California Southern would exchange its first mortgage bonds for income bonds and issue new debt for a 70 mile extension to the Atlantic and Pacific line. The deal leaves California Southern with half its stock and San Diego Land Company stock while funding repairs and extensions. Other rail noise includes Chicago Burlington and Quincy plans for through Chicago St Louis passenger service and Union Pacific shares fluctuating amid sharp commentary from The Transcript. Boston commentary urges a government receiver to recover Union Pacific assets. Earnings show gains for Little Rock and Fort Smith, while Central Massachusetts railroad directors are re-elected with notes on outstanding exchanges.
